"Power Up" Science Museum History of Video Games

The Science Museum's "Power Up" exhibition currently on display in South Kensington is a must-visit for anyone interested in the evolution of video games. 

 It's a great chance to see where the games industry has come from - and where it is going. This matters for animators - because many of our graduates go on to work in the games industry.

Featuring over 160 consoles spanning five decades, this interactive experience at London's Science Museum allows visitors to engage with iconic games from Pong (which I played as a child in the 1970s) and the early Pac-Man to Minecraft and Super Mario. 

History of Video Games

"Power Up" offers a comprehensive journey through gaming history - you can literally play your way back to (or from) the 1970s.  I took my kids last weekend, and I got to rediscover games I had entirely forgotten - like "Chuckie Egg" (there is a remake online here) for the 32k BBC Computer (image on right). 

And yes, you can actually program a highly addictive and fun game with just 32k of RAM.

For our students learning animation "Power Up" provides invaluable insights into the progression of gaming technology and design.  

The early games are much lower tech (obviously) but in many ways just as fun to play.  Head over to the Science Museum and see for yourself.
