Animation Apprentice Visits Jellyfish Pictures

Jellyfish Pictures in Brixton
Last week some of our London-based students were treated to a studio tour of Jellyfish Pictures, getting a unique behind-the-scenes peek into the workings of a growing animation studio.

Jellyfish are a relatively new kid on the London block, but they have grown from modest beginnings to become a major player in visual effects animation and also TV series work - which is currently booming in our home town.

Visiting studios (and crucially, meeting recruiters) is a great way to find out more about who is hiring, and what kind of skills they are looking for.  One useful piece of intelligence we all learned on thursday is that Jellyfish require potential animators to do an animation test in 24 hours - so having a great demo reel is only part of the challenge of landing that crucial first job.

Another thing we learned is the importance of having a business card. It may seem old-fashioned, but it's still a useful thing to be able to hand a recruiter a business card at the end of a first introductory meeting.

Jellyfish do both visual effects and cartoony animation - so they are looking for animators who do tight, disciplined creature work, and also broad, cartoony animation. To see some of their VFX work, watch the demo reel below:
